Nursing Simulation and Skills Laboratories

The College of Nursing is supported by a comprehensive, high-technology simulation and clinical skills infrastructure designed to provide students with a safe, realistic, and learner-centered environment for developing clinical competence. The College has four main specialized simulation and skills laboratories, each focusing on a major area of nursing practice: Acute and Critical Care, Fundamentals of Nursing and Physical Examination, Maternity and Newborn Care, and Pediatric Nursing.

The laboratories are designed to complement classroom teaching and clinical placements by allowing students to practice, repeat, demonstrate, and refine clinical skills before and during their clinical experiences. Simulation-based education provides students with opportunities to manage realistic patient scenarios, make clinical decisions, communicate with patients and healthcare professionals, work effectively as members of a healthcare team, and respond to changes in patients' conditions in a controlled learning environment.

The College's simulation facilities support a progressive learning approach, beginning with fundamental psychomotor skills and physical assessment and progressing toward complex patient care, clinical reasoning, emergency management, and multidisciplinary teamwork. Simulation activities may range from individual skills practice and structured scenarios to high-fidelity clinical simulations involving multiple patient-care priorities.

The College of Nursing Labs:

  • Adult Acute Care and Medical-Surgical Nursing Lab.
  • Physical Examination and Fundamental Nursing Lab.
  • Maternity and Newborn Simulation Lab.
  • Pediatric Nursing Simulation Laboratory

Integration of Simulation into Nursing Education

  • The four laboratories are not used simply as spaces for practicing individual procedures. They form an integrated simulation-based education system within the College of Nursing.
  • Simulation activities are incorporated into the curriculum to support the development of competencies at different levels of the nursing program. Students progressively move from basic skills acquisition to integrated clinical scenarios and complex patient management.

The simulation program supports:

  • Skills acquisition: Students learn and practice essential nursing procedures.
  • Skills validation: Students demonstrate competency against established performance criteria.
  • Clinical reasoning: Students analyze patient information and determine appropriate nursing interventions.
  • Clinical judgment: Students learn to recognize changes in patient condition and prioritize care.
  • Patient safety: Students practice safe medication administration, infection control, identification of risks, and error prevention.
  • Communication: Students practice therapeutic communication and professional handover.
  • Teamwork: Students participate in individual and team-based scenarios.
  • Emergency preparedness: Students practice responding to time-sensitive and life-threatening situations.
  • Reflective learning: Structured debriefing allows students to analyze their performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Transition to clinical practice: Students enter clinical placements with greater confidence and preparedness.
